A Stoke City fan collapsed and needed to be resuscitated by stadium paramedics when Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho scored a last-gasp wonder goal to pinch victory.
The Potters supporter was cheering his team from the stands on Sunday when he was floored by the Brazilian’s piledriver to deny his side a precious point.
The unnamed fan slumped down after the Merseysiders’ 86th minute winner , as nearby paramedics rushed to help him at the Britannia Stadium.
He was successfully resuscitated by his seat behind manager Mark Hughes’ dugout in Block 13 of the ‘Q-Railing Stand’, and is now recovering in hospital.
Premier League stars and wives flooded Twitter with ‘get well soon’ messages including Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam who wrote: “Sad to hear a Stoke fan took ill today at the game. All the players send their best wishes, get well soon.”
Kath Shawcross, wife of defender Ryan said: “We’re hoping to hear some good news on the person who was being attended to by the paramedics behind the dug out today.”
One fan added: “It must have been the goal. Absolutely gutted they scored.”
Ambulance chiefs confirmed they were called into action around 5.50pm – just seconds after the final whistle had blown for the three extra minutes play at the end of the match.
Paramedics said a defibrillator was used to revive him.
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We had a call just before 5.50pm to a male cardiac arrest.
“A community defibrillator was used at the stadium.
“Two ambulances were sent out and he was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. It was a successful resuscitation.”
